TIPS FOR TRAVELLING WITH RNK IN MONGOLIA:

We have tried to list some useful information for your stay with us. For more general tips about travel in Mongolia, please consult a guide book such as Lonely Planet.

Based on your preferred travel route, we may be able to offer some advice with your travel arrangements based on our volunteers’ experience. Please don’t hesitate to ask.

TRAVEL:

Please check with the Mongolian Embassy in your country to see if you need a visa to enter Mongolia. If you do, RNK will send you an invitation letter by request. Please also check about visas to the countries you need to transit through on your way to Mongolia.

When you are leaving Mongolia by airplane, please have your Airport Tax fee ready - it is about $13 USD.

Travelling anywhere within Mongolia takes longer and may be bumpier than what you are used to, as many official roads are earth tracks through the steppe. But with patience and good humor, you will get to your destination in no time, while admiring the beautiful scenery around you.

MONEY:

Credit cards are accepted by some businesses, hotels, and tourist-oriented restaurants in Ulaanbaatar. Until recently, Mongolia only dealt with VISA, but now MasterCard is slowly making an appearance as well.

ATMs are located throughout Ulaanbaatar, but only accept VISA cards, and will not accept your bank card. To withdraw money, you may also go directly to a teller with your VISA card and passport.

CAMP LIFE:

A well-known Mongolian axiom says that you can experience all four seasons in one day! Please be prepared with layers and sturdy shoes.

To minimize your affect on our delicate environment, please try to bring biodegradable soaps and detergents as well as other eco-friendly or reusable products (e.g. rechargeable batteries).

There is no electricity at our camp in Khentii Bag, although we may use a generator or solar panels for work purposes in the future. Right now it's really like going to summer camp. The Internet is widely available in cafes all over Ulaanbaatar.
